Luncheon Date Hat, 1940's

Luncheon Date Hat
Gloves, Socks and Caps

d.c. = double crochet (US single crochet)
ch. = chain


Materials: 2 skeins thick green kniting cotton, 1 skein thick brown knitting cotton, 1 No. 12 crochet hook, hat wire

Tension of Crochet: 4 d.c. to 1 inch

Use cotton double throughout.
With green cotton make 4 ch., join into a ring with a slip stitch. Work 8 d.c. into ring.
1st rd-*1 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
2nd rd-*3 d.c. on 3 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
3rd rd- * 4 d.c. on 4 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
4th rd-*5 d.c. on 5 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
5th rd-* 6 d.c. on 6 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
6th rd-*7 d.c. on 7 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
7th rd-*8 d.c. on 8 d.c., 2 d.c. in next st., repeat from * to end.
Continue to inc. in this manner til 11 rds. have been worked. Work 5 rds. without shaping.
Next rd-*6 d.c. on 6 d.c., miss 1 d.c., 1 d.c. in next st., repeat from * til 2 remain, 2 d.c. on 2 d.c.
Work 6 rds. without shaping.
Next rd-Work 2 d.c. in each st.
Work 7 rds. without shaping.
Next rd-Hold a length of hat wire on the edge of brim, and work 1 rd. of d.c. over it.
Break off green cotton and join in brown.
Work 1 rd. of d.c.
Fasten off.
Trimming:
With brown cotton make 4 ch., join into ring with a slip st.
Work 5 d.c. into ring.
Work 4 rds. of d.c., working 2 d.c. in 1 d.c. where necessary to keep circle flat.
Break off brown cotton, join in green, and using it single work 1 rd. of d.c..
Fasten off.
Make 8 circles in all.
To make up:
Run a piece of hat wire round the edge of crown, on the inside.
Sew trimmings to hat.
