Handy-Dandy Vintage Needle Conversion Chart
I've been noticing people all over the Intercrappinet working with vintage patterns and there always seems to be some question about converting needle sizes. Question no more, for I have constructed in my lowly apartment a Wonderous Conversion Chart from scrap wood, duct tape, and drywall screws. The paint has finally dried so it's all ready to use, but watch out for the splinters.
The Old UK numbers seem to correspond to the Victorian knitting patterns I've posted since all those are English. I have no idea why I don't have any US Victorian stuff.
So now you've got no excuse not to go knit something older than your grandma, Grandma!

i see that size 2 old is a 2 3/4 mm. thank you for the conversion chart, very professional.
Brilliant conversions. Now will you be also including some of the old stitch names/terminology? I have come across a 1920's Corticelli Jumper pattern with spaulding stitch. mm isnt that a tennis racquet term? :)
I know this is a bit late, but hey, I just found this place...
According to a pattern at http://www.allfreecrafts.com/knitting/french-blouse.shtml, the Spaulding pattern is "...knit a row, purl a row..." or esentially the good ol' stockinette stitch. Or perhaps not so old, as it seems to have a name that is even older? (And I know a LOT about 'even older...')
I have a pattern from The Vintage needle that says "make 1 and knit1" Does that mean yarn over, knit1? Then it says second row - seamed third row knit plain does that mean purl then knit?
